NY Inspires Update from KPCSD

Dear Kings Park Community,

Earlier this week, the NYS Board of Regents approved a plan and timeline for advancing the next phase of their NY Inspires initiative. You may have heard about these changes in the media. The biggest change that will occur in the short-term is moving away from “seat time” and passing Regents Exams as the "gate keeper" to graduation. Instead, the focus will be on specific Portrait of a Graduate attributes (i.e. creative innovator, critical thinker, effective communicator, global citizen, etc.) and the demonstration of proficiency. Regents Exams will still be administered and used to measure student achievement, but certain Regents Exams will no longer be required to earn a diploma. While the state's announcement represents a paradigm shift, the concept of ensuring that students demonstrate a broad range of competencies is not new to us here in Kings Park. Please know that we have been anticipating these changes, and the new KPCSD Mission Statement and Vision 2030 Goals that the Board of Education adopted last night will ensure a smooth transition to these new NYS requirements. On Friday, I will highlight the new KPCSD Mission Statement and goals and provide more details. Our focus for the past many years has been on best ensuring that our students graduate with an actionable plan to enter the workforce, higher education, or the military after graduation. This will remain unchanged. We will continue to offer a globally competitive education that includes over 45 ways to earn college credit while still in high school. Don't worry, we got this!
